Evaluation of my music magazine

I have created a music magazine called “VIP” which is influenced by the urban music genre. Urban music is usually aimed at older teenagers who appreciate the sleek styling of the urban image. Urban styling is usually considered with smooth lines and contemporary, cool metaphors. Whilst I have followed the bold, modern strength of urban styling, I have challenged this tradition by using younger models on the front cover of my music magazine so that I might appeal to a younger teenage audience. My models, rather than being sultry, are quite friendly and clean cut to the reader.

Most urban magazines target an older teenage audience; however, my product has a softer image and is going to be more acceptable to the parents of younger teenagers and tweenagers. This allows them still enjoy the urban vibe but without the designer price tag. Throughout the magazine I have included various styles of images, but I have pixelated the more moody photos so that the image is not so harsh.

My magazine needs to be promoted on TV shows such as Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel in order to target audiences who watch iCarley. This is young girls who are likely to be interested in music magazines. I will also need to insure that my magazine has a Twitter and Facebook following. It should be distributed to shops like WHSmith and supermarkets to sit on the shelves with other tweenager magazines.

The process of putting this magazine together has introduced to me a variety of programmes. I discovered that Flicker was a really easy tool to use and is an effective photo sharing site. WordPress was not as straight forward as I hoped it to be but once it is mastered it is an ideal way of submitting work remotely. Photoshop is a complicated photo manipulation programme but it is worth persevering with as the results are so impressive. The entire magazine was created in Indesign. Indesign is also a complicated programme to use because there is such a vast array of tools to use and it takes a while to understand its full potential. However, the programme was very helpful towards the final product.

Initially I had not intended to challenge the style of traditional urban magazines. I had intended to create a very sleek and high class product aimed at the top end of the market. Yet, as I’ve worked through the production process I realised there was a gap in the market at the younger end. I have realised that once an initial idea is brainstormed and played with, it can turn into something completely different and unexpected. In my opinion, I have created a magazine that is now going to have a far greater share of the market than my original plan.

Here are three images of a front cover, contents page and double page spread from a magazine of my choice called “VIBE”. I have chosen to base my music magzine on this particular gnere of R and B/ Hip hop genre.

January 2010 planning music magazine

Here i have a calander on the dates of November and December and how i have organised my photo shoot and also the making of my muis magazine. I told my one of my models to wear glasses and jewelry and basically to try and make them both look stylish and cool. I used an outdoor setting against a white background to make the front cover bright and to have the two models standout.
